Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our typing speed test

Getting Started

How do I start the typing test?

Simply click the "Start Game" button on the homepage. A text will appear, and you'll have 60 seconds to type as much of it as possible. The test begins as soon as you start typing.

Do I need to create an account?

No account is required. Your scores and statistics are saved locally in your browser, so you can track your progress without signing up. However, this means your data is device-specific and won't sync across different browsers or devices.

Is this typing test free?

Yes, our typing speed test is completely free to use. There are no hidden fees, premium tiers, or paywalls. We support the site through non-intrusive advertisements.

Understanding Your Results

What is WPM?

WPM stands for "Words Per Minute." It's the standard measurement for typing speed. One "word" is calculated as 5 characters (including spaces and punctuation). For example, if you type 250 characters in one minute, your WPM is 50.

How is accuracy calculated?

Accuracy is the percentage of characters you typed correctly. It's calculated by dividing the number of correct characters by the total characters typed. For instance, if you type 95 correct characters out of 100 total, your accuracy is 95%.

What is a good typing speed?

Average typing speeds vary, but here's a general guideline:

  • 20-35 WPM: Beginner level
  • 40-55 WPM: Average (most people)
  • 60-75 WPM: Above average
  • 80-100 WPM: Advanced/Professional
  • 100+ WPM: Expert level

Why does my WPM fluctuate between tests?

This is completely normal. Your typing speed can vary based on text difficulty, familiarity with words, fatigue, time of day, and even your mood. Focus on your average speed over multiple tests rather than a single result.

Features and Functionality

Can I change the test duration?

Currently, the standard test duration is 60 seconds. This is the industry standard for typing tests. You can end the test early by typing the entire text, or wait for the full minute to elapse.

What languages are supported?

Our typing test automatically detects your browser language and provides texts in 6 languages: English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese. Each language has a curated selection of practice texts.

How many practice texts are available?

We offer 40+ unique practice texts covering diverse topics like nature, technology, lifestyle, culture, and more. Texts are randomly selected for each test to keep your practice sessions varied and engaging.

Can I practice with my own text?

Currently, the typing test uses pre-selected texts to ensure consistency and fair comparison of results. Custom text input may be added as a feature in the future.

How are high scores tracked?

Your high scores are saved locally in your browser's storage. The system tracks your best WPM, total games played, and displays your top scores with accuracy percentages and dates. This data persists as long as you don't clear your browser's local storage.

Technical Questions

Which browsers are supported?

Our typing test works on all modern browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, and Opera. We recommend using the latest version of your browser for the best experience.

Does it work on mobile devices?

Yes, the typing test is fully responsive and works on tablets and smartphones. However, for the best typing experience and accurate WPM measurement, we recommend using a physical keyboard on a desktop or laptop computer.

Why did I lose my scores?

Scores are stored in your browser's local storage. If you clear your browser data, use a different browser or device, or browse in incognito/private mode, your scores won't be available. Make sure to use the same browser and avoid clearing your browsing data if you want to maintain your history.

Is JavaScript required?

Yes, our typing test requires JavaScript to be enabled in your browser. The interactive features, timer, and score calculations all depend on JavaScript functionality.

Improving Your Skills

How can I improve my typing speed?

Improving typing speed takes consistent practice. Here are key tips:

  • Practice daily for 15-30 minutes
  • Focus on accuracy first, speed will follow
  • Learn proper finger placement (touch typing)
  • Don't look at the keyboard while typing
  • Maintain proper posture and hand position

Check our Typing Tips page for comprehensive guidance.

How long does it take to improve?

With dedicated practice, most people can see noticeable improvement in 2-4 weeks. Beginners might improve by 10-15 WPM in their first month. Remember, consistency is more important than long practice sessions. 20 minutes daily beats 2 hours once a week.

Should I focus on speed or accuracy?

Always prioritize accuracy over speed. Typing fast with many errors is counterproductive because you'll spend time correcting mistakes. Aim for 95%+ accuracy, and speed will naturally increase with muscle memory. Fast, accurate typing comes from practicing slow, accurate typing.

What if I'm stuck at a certain speed?

Plateaus are normal in skill development. To break through: (1) Take a break for a few days to avoid burnout, (2) Focus on difficult letter combinations or keys, (3) Temporarily slow down to reinforce proper technique, and (4) Vary your practice material. Sometimes progress happens after rest.

Privacy and Data

What data do you collect?

We only store typing test results locally in your browser. We don't collect personal information, emails, or any identifying data. The site uses standard analytics to understand usage patterns, but no typing data is sent to our servers.

Is my typing data private?

Yes, completely. Your typing results, scores, and practice sessions are stored only in your browser's local storage. This data never leaves your device. We have no access to your individual test results or typing patterns.

Do you use cookies?

We use minimal cookies for essential functionality and analytics. We may also use advertising cookies to display relevant ads. You can manage cookie preferences in your browser settings. See our Privacy Policy for details.

Troubleshooting

The timer isn't starting

Make sure you've clicked the "Start Game" button. The timer begins when you start typing in the text area. If it still doesn't work, try refreshing the page or using a different browser.

Text highlighting isn't working

Text should highlight in green for correct characters and red for errors as you type. If this isn't happening, ensure JavaScript is enabled and try clearing your browser cache.

The page looks broken or doesn't load properly

Try these steps: (1) Hard refresh the page (Ctrl+F5 on Windows, Cmd+Shift+R on Mac), (2) Clear your browser cache, (3) Disable browser extensions that might interfere, (4) Try a different browser, or (5) Check if JavaScript is enabled.
